When Jesus was asked which of the commandments was the most important, he replied:
Matthew 22:37 Thou shalt
love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first
and great commandment. And the second is like unto it,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two
commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Thus the "big print" in the Bible says:
love God
love one another
And breaking the second part down a bit:
help the less fortunate
do unto others as you would have them do unto you
judge not lest you be judged
To many of us, the conservative weapon-toting ethos
doesn't resonate. The tendency to start wars doesn't seem
like a good fit either. And judging folks based on their
apparent motivation, life choices, sexual orientation,
or religious alignment doesn't seem like something Jesus
would do.
If you think you're somehow wrong because your views don't
line up with the conservatives who have proclaimed their ownership
(at least politically) of all things related to Christ, don't
worry. You're not alone. There are many of us who find the
liberal ideology a much more natural starting point for following
Christ.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life.
